August 4, 2025

The term refined foods is thrown around a lot, but what exactly does it mean? When it comes to clear skin, refined/processed foods are foods that are neither naturally occurring (naturally exist in nature) or created from purely naturally occurring foods.

Any food that’s man-made or created from processes that use ingredients that aren’t naturally occurring is what we define as a refined or processed food.

These foods can be problematic because not everyone’s body is able to digest refined foods–without symptoms.

How to identify a refined or processed food

If you’re having a tough time figuring out if a food or ingredient is a refined/processed food, do a Google search with one or both of the questions below and see what the answer is. Questions to put in Google/AI:

  • What is [ingredient name]
  • How is [ingredient name] made
