For the longest, someone on the Become a Force team would eat ground beef and rice for lunch and get sleepy afterwards. This didn’t make sense so they assumed the culprit was rice.
The sleepiness continued while on a carnivore diet which also didn’t make sense. Several resources will tell you that sleepiness after a meal is due to an insulin spike that causes glucose in your blood stream to crash.
This BAF member would get sleepy after eating sweet potatoes and other root vegetables like yams. These are complex carbs which aren’t reported to spike blood sugar and cause insulin spikes like simple carbs.
It’s the food, not insulin spike
Some people probably get sleepy because of an insulin spike but if you’ve tested that theory and still get sleepy when eating certain foods, the food itself may be the problem.
The BAF member who gets sleepy after eating beef and sweet potatoes rarely, if ever, gets sleepy after eating chicken, pork, or any other meat. This member also doesn’t get sleepy after eating non-root vegetable carbs.
For example, if they ate the same or more plantains than they did in sweet potatoes, they wouldn’t get sleepy. If they ate the sweet potato (lets say 1.5 servings) they would get sleepy.
Takeaway
If you get sleepy after eating, the sleepiness may not be due to an insulin spike. Rather, your body may be sensitive to the food for some reason. If you don’t like getting sleepy after eating, exclude those foods from your diet.
