Foods to avoid for clear skin: Refined oils aka Vegetable oils

August 4, 2025

Commonly known and used vegetable oils

  • Canola (rapeseed) oil
  • Corn oil
  • Cottonseed oil
  • Peanut oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Sunflower oil

There are hot debates on whether or not these foods are inflammatory but they come from seeds, nuts, or grains, so they stand the chance of causing skin flare-ups. If you can eat these without skin flare-ups that’s fine for you but just know that they can cause inflammation for some.

Some of these oils are created by using a non-food chemical called hexane. Remember that we recommend you avoid any foods that are created with non-food chemicals because these end-product foods can be an unknown source of skin issues.

There are some vegetable oils that are made without hexane. To find those products, look for cold-pressed or expeller-pressed on the label. Cold-pressed and expeller-pressed means they didn’t use chemicals to pull the oil out of the food.

We recommend cold-pressed over expeller-pressed because expeller-pressed extraction requires a higher heat that may impact the oil in undesirable ways. Note: Cold-pressed oil products are often more expensive because the expeller-pressed oils may be cheaper for the manufacturer to make.
