Foods to avoid for clear skin: High fructose corn syrup

August 4, 2025

High fructose corn syrup actually comes from a natural food, corn. There are a host of weight loss issues surrounding this ingredient you can read about here.

One of the reasons high fructose syrup can be a source of skin inflammation is because of its fructose content. Although it’s from corn, it is a hyper concentrated form of fructose which is one component of fruits. We and others have found that some people are sensitive to fructose. Fructose is a naturally occurring sugar typically found in fruit. Some people only get issues after after passing a certain threshold (ex: 5g of fructose) that’s unique to their body. For example, some of our clients can’t eat apples without their face itching minutes later. Some fruits give our clients headaches.

One of the hypotheses for why fruits give people issues is that fruits of today have been designed to be sweeter and bigger. More sweetness typically equates to more fructose and other sugars. If fruits are bigger, we’re ingesting more quantities of these sugars in ways our bodies may not have been designed to handle.

Another reason why corn can be a source of skin inflammation is because corn is a grain (seed) that contains defense chemicals. We explain why grains can cause unclear skin next.
